CATHOLIC Churches

The Catholic Church has been dominant in south Louisiana since the first settlers arrived over 200 years ago. The Catholic church records from the beginnings of the church (in Terrebonne, Lafourche, and Assumption Parishes) until the beginning of the 20th century have been published in Rev. Donald Hebert's 12 volume work, South Louisiana Records. This set is available in several of the parishes libraries. It is also available at the Diocese Archives, which is located on Audubon Drive next to the Nicholls State University in nearby Thibodaux. Older records (the originals) are stored at the Diocese Archives. For newer records, you have to visit the appropriate church.

PROTESTANT Churches
Note that Rev. Hebert's series also includes courthouse records, which have protestant marriages.

FUMC, 1922-1956 United Methodist Church
The United Methodist Church built the first church in Terrebonne Parish back in 1845. But the church, which sent only English-speaking pastors to the area for the first 60+ years, never really grew. The only record book from the 1800's that exists was "found" at the Gibson UM Church in 1976 and sent to the UM Archives in Shreveport. The records have been published in a book, which can be found at the Terrebonne Parish library. For the 20th century records, you must visit the appropriate church. The Houma UM churches include: First UMC and Wesley UMC. There are also UM churches in Gray (Mt. Vernon UMC) and Dulac (Clanton Chapel UMC).  The Houma Heights UMC merged with the Bayou Blue UMC in 1999.  The Bayou Blue church is just over the parish line in Lafourche parish.
Houma's First UMC has records that go back to 1907. The history of 1st UMC, Houma is also available on-line. The Gibson UMC, built in 1849, was discontinued as an active congregation. It still stands and is maintained by the Walther family.
