The main branch of the Terrebonne Parish Library System is located at 151 Civic Ctr. Dr. in Houma, Louisiana. It is open Monday through Thursday from 9am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday from 9am to 6pm, and Sunday from 2 pm to 6 pm. While there are a number of branches around the parish, the major extensions are the North Branch and the East Branch. The genealogy collection is located at the main branch on Civic Center Drive. The Genealogy & Local History Room is located on the second floor. As you exit the elevator or stairs, the room is ahead to the left. There are also a number of tables in the room, some with computers. Note: the computers do have a built-in time limit that will log you off after one hour of use. The microfilm viewing room has one overhead viewer and several viewer/printers. It also has an open book scanner that makes copies of books placed face-up on its scanning bed. The latest equipment is a microfilm scanner that will scan microfilm so that you can save it to your flash drive. Genealogical Materials at the Terrebonne Parish Library, Main Branch BOOKS There are literally hundreds of books in the genealogy section. Of course, the largest single category covers south Louisiana, Cajun, and Acadian genealogy. There are also books on other locations and fields of genealogy. Although most books are for library use only, there are duplicate sets of some books that can be checked out. Some of the key resources include: South Louisiana Records by Rev. Donald Hebert Baton Rouge Diocese Church Records New Orleans Diocese Sacramental Records Indices for Louisiana (and certain other states) Censuses Published censuses of Terrebonne from 1840 to 1910 (excluding 1890, of course) Indices of obituaries from Terrebonne & Lafourche papers by TGS South Louisiana Vital Family Records (7 volumes) by TGS Cemeteries of Terrebonne Parish (3 volumes) by TGS A 6 volume Acadian work by Bona Arsenault A 7 volume Acadian work by Adrien Bergeron PERIODICALS The library gets most of the south Louisiana genealogical publications. Back issues of periodicals, especially south Louisiana material, are available. A number of other genealogical periodicals are also in the collection. MICROFILM Census records for all extant censuses are available. The soundex is available for the censuses of 1880, 1900, and 1910. Microfilm copies of old newspaper issues are also available. A microfilm printer is available at 25 cents a copy. COMPUTERS There will be several computers in the Genealogy Room (and many more in other areas of the library. They are all connected to the internet and have a one hour limit on usage. The collection of CD-ROMs is up to about 60 now, and more are being purchased. As a staff person about using them.
