Note to Other Biology II Teachers |
| For the 2003-2004 school year,
we will be following the state curriculum for Biology II. This involves
four main topics that must be taught. It allows for the instructor
to pick from five additional topics ... one being anatomy/physiology.
Since human anatomy/physiology has traditionally been the focus of Biology
II, that is what we have picked for this year. Therefore, the first
half of the course will cover the four required topics in the state curriculum,
while the second half will consist of human anatomy and physiology.
Since we did not purchase science textbooks this year, we have no text or supplementary materials for the first half of the course. I am constructing the course as we go and am drawing material from a number of sources. The notes and a practice test will appear online before each test, and I am trying to create interactive quizzes. We do have textbooks for the second half of the course. I will be reducing the amount of material that we used to cover in four grading periods so that we can cover human anatomy and physiology in two. I will be requiring at least 2 research papers this year. The first one will be a four page paper from one of the topics we'll cover in the first half of the course. The second paper will be based on experimentation. As part of the Biology II course, we are working in partnership with LUMCON in a water quality project in Terrebonne Parish. A LUMCON scientist will visit our class to explain the project, and then we will be taking a field trip to LUMCON (Fall class - Oct. 2; Spring class - Feb. 5). Then, one or more times a month, we will be taking measurements from Bayou Terrebonne in front of THS and entering the data at the LUMCON website. Students will have to do a written report on the data collected (by our class and others). |
